Microsoft restricts the number of computers you may install Microsoft Home and Business 2010 on. Depending on the version your purchase, you may have one or more licenses to use. If you have multiple computers, you can save money by purchasing additional licenses versus additional copies of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010. Microsoft discontinued direct sales of this product after introducing its Office 2013 line, but as of early 2010 it can still be purchased from third-party sources.

Traditional Disc

If you purchase a physical disc at a retail location, you are licensed to use Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 on either one or two computers. The number of licenses will be listed on the disc packaging. If you purchased the software from Microsoft, you may download the software and order a backup disc in the event you need to reinstall the software.

Product Key Card

When you purchase a product key card, you are allowed to install Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 on a single computer. The product key card requires you to either download the software from Microsoft or you can activate a trial version that was installed on your computer at time of purchase. Full download details and instructions are included on the product key card.

Transferring Licenses

Licenses are only transferable if you purchase the two license option. You must deactivate Office on one computer before installing it on another computer. Only two computers may have an activated copy of Office at any given time.

If your computer crashes or you must replace the hard drive, contact Microsoft support for assistance on transferring your license. They will deactivate your existing license which enables you to activate Office on your new computer or hard drive. This applies whether you have a single license or two license version of the software.

Additional Licenses

You cannot add additional licenses to Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 beyond the quantity of licenses that come with the purchased product (disc or license key). You must purchase either Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 or Microsoft Office Standard 2010 to qualify for volume licensing. You must purchase additional copies of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 in order to gain more licenses.
